You Really Do Need Somebody
August 17, 2018
Two are better off than one, because together if the one falls down the other can help him up. If someone is alone and falls, there's no one to help him. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
You have to have support. Part of your plan needs to be building a team that will help you fight the battle to stay free and healthy. No one ever changes and heals alone. No one. You need a team. The people you enlist to help you will give you the following:
- Strength. Ecclesiastes reminds us that we fall sometimes, and when you have a team, they can help you get up and get going again. They can also strengthen you so that you don’t fall in the first place. Remember when Jesus was facing the hardest night He would live: that night in the Garden. He had His team with Him—He needed their support.
- Accountability. When you are solo, it is much easier to fall off the wagon and fail. No one even notices you aren’t around anymore, or realizes that you have begun a fatal slide. A team notices and affirms and encourages when you are doing well; gives backbone and perspective when you are not. You can’t go AWOL easily.
- Motivation. It’s always easier to do something with a partner. That’s the principle behind every support group, from Weight-Watchers to AA. God made us that way, and it’s why He told us through Hebrews to be careful to spur each other on to do good works (Hebrews 10:24).
With Jesus, a close friend or two, and your church family, you have the team you need to successfully break free and begin the journey to healing. Without a team, you will fall prey to the same cycle over and over again. These relationships will help you identify and eliminate your wrong thinking and replace it with a healthy, Jesus-like positive perspective.
It is time for you to live—really live. Free and healthy. It’s what God wants for you and what His people want for you. You can work the plan with God for the life He created you to enjoy. You will grow in every way, you will use your gifts in serving Him and others in healthy and freeing ways, you will build beautiful, intimate relationships, and you’ll make a difference in the world.
You can be as free as you want to be. Jesus wants you to be forgiven AND free.
- Identify your team. Whose support do you need to enlist? Do it.
