The Greatest Fight

April 18, 2019

Therefore, I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”Nehemiah 4:13-14

World War II has been described as the most significant war in modern history. Legendary battles such as the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy invasion are said to be major contributors to the life of the free world today. The people who served in World War II have been described as “the greatest generation” because of the diligence, bravery, and sacrifice they freely gave.

As significant as those battles were, few of us can see any direct connection between what they did and who we are at this moment today. There IS a battle that is waging right now, one that will show immediate results, and one that WILL directly impact your family, depending on your action or inaction.

We live in a world where we have an Enemy, and the culture around us is largely hostile to the truth of God. We have many “exposed places” where our families and loved ones are vulnerable, and too often, we give up in fear. God challenges us through Nehemiah, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” This is the greatest fight, the greatest battle we will ever face. We need to step up to the challenge! The greatest investment anyone can ever make is in the next generation. Fight for your family—for your sons and daughters!

We believe in the church, but we know this: What happens at home is more important than what happens at church.

  • Are you aware of and can you name attacks of the Enemy on your family?
  • Can you identify your strategy for fighting for your family?
  • How do your time investments show that you are taking the battle seriously?
  • Pray: Father, there is nothing I will ever do in this life that is more important than fighting for my family. No other success will compensate for my failure here. I don’t want to run from the battle or leave gaps exposed that I should be covering. I need Your wisdom, courage, and strength. Speak to me so I will know what to do. Strengthen me with courage to do it. Amen.”
