Grace for My Fear

July 8, 2019

The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13

Our family has had no shortage of hard times and struggles the last few years. We’ve had the normal ups and downs of family life, with job situations and houses and all the details of life. But we’ve had unexpected challenges that have been monumental: numerous sudden deaths, extended illnesses, and even a tragic accident. More, but that should tell enough.

If we were going it alone, any of these things might have been enough to break us, but through it all we’ve had strong faith that God is working in our lives, that we can trust Him, and that His strength is enough. He has been a supplier of grace; just what we need when we need it most.

One of the hardest things to do as a Christian is to have faith that God is working and to not be afraid of all the things that come our way. When we are in the hardest places and we wonder if things will ever change, God’s grace is available to lead us through the fear. God’s grace will give us a flow of peace and calm that we could never manufacture on our own power.

If we lose power at our house and it goes completely dark, I don’t get scared. I can still find my way around. Why? Because in the daylight I have become so familiar with my surroundings. I have found that memorizing Scripture is so helpful for me because I am constantly reminded that I’m surrounded by God. It can get very dark sometimes, but those Scriptures and the memory of God’s faithfulness to me in the past is so brilliant that I am distinctly aware I am not alone.

The Scriptures for today are among the ones that help me the most. God’s grace flows to me through them.

  • Are you in a dark place? Remember God’s faithfulness and let His grace flow.
  • Are you in a place of sunshine and joy? Memorize some truths; get familiar with the faithfulness of God so it can lead you in the dark times.
