What Do You Want to Talk About?
March 19, 2020
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, “The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.” John 16:13-15 NLT
If a person has a counseling appointment the counselor may start the sessions with the question, “What is it that you’d like to discuss? What are you here to talk about?” Often the initial discussion reveals that the real issue to discuss is deeper, and what the counselee wanted to talk about was only a symptom.
That’s the way it is with the Holy Spirit. It is wonderful to be able to talk to God in prayer starting wherever we are and with however we feel. But the Holy Spirit will not just play along with us. He will give us help where we are, but He will go from that place and lead us into all truth. I may be talking to Him about a symptom of my hurt feelings; He may address my deeper issue of pride. He will take me to truth if I will listen.
Have you ever tried to talk to a person who was all about himself or herself? They were constantly tooting their own horn, talking about their accomplishments? The Holy Spirit will never do that. He always wants to talk about Jesus. There are parts of the Christian community that talk about the Holy Spirit so much that Jesus takes a backseat. Everything is about the Holy Spirit’s power, what He does, and the superior place they occupy since the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that would never be the way the Holy Spirit operates. The Holy Spirit honors Jesus. Everything is from Jesus and about Jesus. Everything He does glorifies Jesus, not Himself.
When the Holy Spirit fills your life, you will love Jesus more and more deeply. You will recognize that nothing matches the value of what Jesus has done for you, and one of the things He has done is given you the Holy Spirit to live in you on Jesus’ behalf. He will give you all you need to know to live the abundant life, the life truly to the full (John 10:10).
- Lord Jesus, thank You for the tremendous price You paid for me. I am so grateful to be forgiven and free. Your life has given me life. I am overwhelmed at the thought that You gave me the Holy Spirit to live in me. He helps me, just as You said He would. He tells me truth. I commit to obey the truth. I know it comes from You. Amen.
