Canceling the Record

April 5, 2021

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 NLT

What a change Easter brought to broken humanity! What an opportunity for you and me! We are familiar with the fallen world in which we live, and before we are very old we experience the shame and hopelessness, anger and regret that come from our poor choices, mistakes, failures, and yes—flat-out sins. We try to cope with our memories and our consequences the best we can, but the ghosts of the past haunt us. We feel like we are broken and can’t be fixed. It seems the past has cost us our future. It all makes living consistently and purposefully seem impossible.

Paul knew what that felt like, and he described it as “being dead because of our sins.” But then came Easter! Jesus Christ willingly went to the cross and took all of our sins with Him: past, present, and future. The full record of every single failure was nailed to the cross with Jesus. He canceled the charges through His death!

Then His resurrection showed His forever almighty power to not only forgive us of the past and release us from the shame and hopelessness, but to give us power to live in a new way with new strength and joy. He empowers us to live lives that honor Him, help us, and make us gratefully proud of who we are becoming. This is the message of Easter! Christ’s death and resurrection did far more than give us a ticket to heaven—they give us power to live life fully in the here and now. When I am delivered from the weight of the past, I have energy and motivation to make a new future with a daily relationship with an alive Savior who promises to make me able for every situation as I find my strength in Him. “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come” (Ephesians 1:19-21 NLT).

“The same power that rose Jesus from the grave, the same power that commands the dead to wake, lives in us, lives in us. We have this hope, His promises are true, in His strength there is nothing we can’t do.” – Jeremy Camp

  • Pray: Take a moment right now to thank Jesus for His willing and sacrificial death on the cross that has made forgiveness and the canceling of your past failures possible. Thank Him for His resurrection power that He makes available to you.
