Lead Me and Use Me

January 13, 2022

Jesus: “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” John 14:12-14 NLT

The need for leadership is universal. The desire to be used, to be a part of something significant and lasting, is central to every emotionally and spiritually healthy person. The thought that we can be led and used by the Creator of the Universe, Almighty God Himself, is awe-inspiring and motivational.

Jesus made a tremendous pitch, a should-be irresistible call, for us to be willing—no, anxious!—to be led and used by Him. He said that it was His desire and intent to lead anyone who would follow Him. His leadership would come through constant communication.

How would He use us? It seems impossible to believe—He said He would use us to do the very things He had done, and even greater! Of course, He was not saying that we would be greater than He is, but He was limited to one human body. As His church, His body of obedient followers, we will make a monumental difference in our worlds, multiplying what He did. It’s our calling and our opportunity as we ask Him to lead and use us. Everything we say and do will point the world to the trustworthiness and faithfulness of Jesus.

Jesus said that all of us who are truly His forgiven and freed followers will carry on His work. He said that all of us together, through His resurrection power, would do things greater than the works He did while here as a man. Finally, He tells us this will happen because all of us can ask for and receive everything we need to do His work. Can you sense Him speaking that to you now? “I give you the Holy Spirit. I give you my own power, the power of the crucified and risen Jesus. And I now promise you that you can ask for anything in my name for this mission—for the glory of my Father.”

What does it mean to ask in His name? It means that it is for HIS fame and glory, not mine. It means to count on His power. It means I subject everything to His wisdom. It means His will and mission is my greatest desire. When I pray all my prayers through this filter, when I pray to be led and used in this way, I will have everything I need to do the will of the Father.

  • Lead me, Jesus. Use me. It is the path to fulfilling the purpose for which I was created, and the only thing that will fulfill me. Help me keep focused. In Your name, for Your fame. Amen.
