I Am Who He Says I Am

If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

The Word tells us that when we are in Christ, in His family, we have become a new creation. We have a new identity. Our behavior and understanding may not change immediately, but our new identity ushers in the promise and the potential for everything my life needs to be for meaning and fulfillment. Just as a new citizen of the United States may not speak perfect English, know all our traditions and history, and may not look like I look (an American citizen since my birth decades ago), my identity as a citizen gives me all the same rights and privileges.

God your Father says repeatedly that as His child, you are forgiven, loved, and called to be part of His great mission in our world. Let’s get specific about a few facts:

Your identity in Christ means you are part of God’s chosen and loved family. As you begin to know and participate with others, you will experience the adventure and fulfillment of doing life with other transformed people and being part of a greater mission.

Your identity in Christ means you can talk to God. God is always available and willing to communicate with you in any situation or mood. He says, “When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen.” Jeremiah 29:12 MSG

Your identity in Christ means you have a community of believers who provide love and support and help you grow. Unconditional love is impossible until you factor in the transforming love of Christ. As we grow together, we find the consistent support, encouragement, accountability, and resources of others.

Your identity in Christ means you can live in healthy relationships. Relationships are life-giving and the gold in life. They can also cause pain and conflict. But your new identity gives tools to live with others and enjoy the benefits of healthy relationships.

  • Father, help me cooperate today with every blessing I have in my new identity. Show me where I need to step up and truly live who I am.
