News Flash! Spring is Coming!
March 2, 2021
It is hard to believe that we are in March. For some reason, the difficulties of the COVID-19 winter have made it seem exceptionally long. But the weather is beginning to turn! Even though it has dropped into the 20s during the night and early morning, we’ve had a few days in the 50s and numerous ones in the 40s. That means some of us have already worn shorts!
The weather is beginning to turn. It reminds me of Song of Solomon’s joyful observation: “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.” Song of Songs 2:11-12 NIV
This past year has been a challenge for all of us. The flowers will be dazzling as they bloom, the sun will seem extraordinarily warm and beautiful, and the birds building nests and chirping will be so very welcome. It’s the way God designed the world. After the winter comes growth and joy.
God promises the same to us spiritually. We all have difficult days. We have winters of the soul when we feel like the sun may never shine again. We have seasons when it appears that all we see and feel is cold and unyielding. Will there ever be growth and fruit again? This does not mean that God has forsaken us. Just as God is working in the world and doing unseen things in the soil, in the coldest and longest of winters, spring eventually comes, then summer and eventually harvest. In the winter of nature, God works with cooperative seeds and brings a new season of growth and beauty. It is never perpetual winter.
It is that way for all the “cooperative seeds” in relationship with Him. On the darkest days and the coldest nights, God is doing something great. He is working in ways we cannot see to bring growth, beauty, and harvest we can’t imagine and could never do on our own. In my own life I can testify again and again that the richest fruit and the greatest beauty has come after the hardest spiritual winters, and the unseen work God was doing in those times.
I pray that as you see and experience winter turning into spring, this will be a reality for your life with God. I pray that the Word of God will refresh and grow you right now.
“Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.” Deuteronomy 32:2 NIV
The person who trusts God and obeys Him is like a tree planted by rivers of water. Let this be you and me. Our season is coming!
“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:3 NIV
