Friends and Your Future

October 11, 2022

The old saying goes, “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” Skeptical about that? Well, let’s think about it.

First, take a moment to think about the people with whom you spend the most time. Who are they? Do they push you outside your comfort zone and lift you up? Do they lead you toward growth? Or do they pull you down, hold you back, and discourage you? Do you let them excuse you and accept your excuses?

You really must think about it. If you have any ambitions and goals, if you want to fulfill your potential, if you want to go to the next level in any arena of life – business, health, happiness, parenting, relationship with God – you must surround yourself with people who are further along than you in that specific area.

If you struggle with your relationship with God, surround yourself with people who are walking in faith and joy and your relationship with God will heat up.

If you want to up your business game, start associating with people with integrity and a great work ethic, making great strides forward. Over time you will see your business knowing new success.

If you want to get your health in better shape, spend time with people who are more fit and more disciplined than you.

If you struggle with your relationships, make it a point to immerse yourself among people with great marriages and families. Yours will improve.

Wise Solomon said, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm.” Proverbs 13:20 NIV

This is why being part of a small group is so important. We say that doing life alone is dangerous. But WHO the people are that you do life with is so very important.

The Hebrews writer says in Hebrews 13:2 NIV, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!”

An angel is a messenger, not a usual acquaintance. The chance of “entertaining angels” is why it is important to keep fresh and new people in our lives who stretch us and challenge us. Your authentic small group may just have people who will be angels for you.

So what area of your life do you need help in? Do you need strengthened in your marriage, parenting, relationship with Christ, finances, leadership, work, health? God is faithful. He will put the people you need in your life in your pathway. You must be faithful, disciplined, intentional, and consistent in choosing to spend your time and energy on the right people and the right relationships.
