God Helps Those Who …

September 27, 2024

Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe. Proverbs 28:26 NLT

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Romans 5:6 NLT

Did you know that the famous old phrase “God helps those who help themselves” comes to us by way of Ben Franklin, not God? Absolutely true. There is nothing like that anywhere in God’s Word. Nowhere do we find a principle, a parable, or a person doing life alone, relying only on themselves, and God finally gets impressed enough with their efforts that He steps in and helps them. In fact, it’s completely the opposite. God set the precedent and makes a practice of stepping in when we are utterly helpless. The Bible tells us that relying on ourselves is foolish. We need God’s help and the insight and help of others.

Our pride and fears can make it difficult to admit that we don’t know something or that we need help. It may seem like asking for help means that we are weak or incapable. But seeking help is a sign of strength and resilience.

When we ask for help, we are acknowledging and demonstrating to God and others that we understand our limits. We are showing that we recognize the value of other people’s opinions and expertise. It shows that we know God is essential to our satisfaction and success. It develops humility, a trait highly valued by God and others. Even people who are not humble themselves have respect for humility when they see it in others. God says that when we are humble, He loves to “lift us up.” Asking for help can open doors to experiences we never imagined.

Asking for help from God and people can save us time and energy and prevent mistakes. We will develop our relationship with God and others by asking for help. Their assistance will better equip us for difficult challenges and develop our courage and capability.

Asking for help is an important part of a growing, satisfying life. When you recognize your need and turn to God first, and then to the people He puts in your life, you are accessing wisdom and expertise far beyond your own, and the end results we be more than you can imagine, certainly more than you could do alone.

  • Asking for help is wisdom. Giving help when asked is too. Receiving God’s help is life and eternity transforming. And His help often comes through people.
