Following Jesus: When His Agenda Collides with Yours

Following Jesus: When His Agenda Collides with Yours

October 13, 2026

Following Jesus sounds simple until His agenda conflicts with your own. At some point, what Jesus wants will collide with what you want. His direction may challenge your plans, confront your preferences, or require you to do something uncomfortable. And when that moment comes, you will have a choice to make.

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 NIV

Jesus invited the misbehaved, doubters, unbelievers, and outsiders to follow Him. His invitation is open to everyone.

But while the invitation is free, following Jesus will eventually cost you something. It may cost you money, career advancement, popularity, or even relationships. It may mean choosing integrity over opportunity, forgiveness over resentment, generosity over comfort, or obedience over convenience.

Following Jesus means surrendering your agenda for His.

When the Cost Becomes too High

Not everyone who initially appears to choose Jesus continues to follow Him.

Jesus told the parable of the sower, describing those who receive the Word with joy but fall away when trouble or persecution comes because they have no deep roots (Matthew 13:20–21).

First John 2:19 also reminds us that some who were once among the believers eventually departed, revealing that they did not truly belong to the community of faith.

The sobering reality is that some people are willing to follow Jesus until following Him costs them something. They follow when it’s convenient, when their friends approve, and when faith fits comfortably into their plans. But when obedience threatens their comfort, reputation, relationships, or ambitions, they face a decision.

Will they continue following Jesus, or will they walk away?

Following Jesus can be inconvenient, costly, and even embarrassing. But the question isn’t whether following Jesus will cost you something. The question is whether you trust Him enough to follow when it does.

Faith Must Become Action

James writes, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:17 NIV

Faith is more than believing in Jesus. It’s trusting Him enough to obey Him. If He calls you to forgive, you forgive. If He calls you to give, you give. If He calls you to serve, you serve. If He calls you to stand for truth, you stand—even when it’s unpopular.

Obedience doesn’t earn God’s love; it demonstrates that our faith is shaping our lives. Jesus isn’t simply asking to be part of your agenda. He is asking you to make Him Lord of your agenda.

The good news is that while following Jesus may cost you something, you’ll discover that nothing compares with the life you gain when you trust Him completely.

The Question Is, “Will You Follow?”

Perhaps you’re standing at that intersection right now. You know what Jesus is asking, but you also know what it might cost. Will you protect your comfort, or will you pursue His calling? Will you follow only when it’s easy, or will you remain faithful when it’s difficult?

Jesus didn’t call us merely to admire Him, agree with Him, or believe certain things about Him. He called us to follow Him.

Eventually, your agenda will run into His. When it does, you will have a choice to make.

May our response be simple: “Jesus, even when it’s inconvenient, even when it costs me something, and even when I don’t fully understand, I will follow You.”

Because the goal isn’t simply to start following Jesus. The goal is to keep following Jesus.
