Seeking Discernment

Seeking Discernment

November 17, 2025

Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:5-6 NKJV

Many people think that discernment is simply common sense or intuition. But it is far more than that:

  • Discernment is learning to think God’s thoughts after Him, practically and spiritually. It means having a sense of how God sees things.
  • Discernment is a spiritual skill to recognize God’s voice, to distinguish truth from deception, and make wise decisions.
  • Discernment is the ability to make discriminating judgments, distinguish between situations, and recognize moral implications, and to think God's thoughts.

These three good definitions let us know that true discernment requires a connection with God. Discernment is not primarily about gaining knowledge of a subject or getting an answer to a question. Discernment focuses on understanding what it is to properly reverence God, and to truly come to know God. In getting to know God more deeply, He gives us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

Here's a mini “Discernment 101” course. Discernment allows a person to see things through God's eyes, which involves a deep, spiritual understanding. With discernment, I will be enabled to distinguish truth from error. As I know God more deeply and intimately, He helps me separate what is good from what is evil, what is true from what is a lie, and what is wise from foolishness.

Discernment enables me to align with God’s will. Through discernment, I can avoid deception and make wise decisions that fit with God's purposes and guidance. It is a gift from God to help individuals avoid being misled by appearances or emotions. The Holy Spirit helps me to walk in the right paths. Discernment is a spiritual life skill, a process that helps me become more and more spiritually mature, developing a deeper sense of God's presence and purpose.

Discernment requires humility and surrender. To be eligible for discernment, I must be able to hold my own opinions and ego lightly so God has freedom to show me truth.

  • Father, help me learn to hear You. Give me a discerning spirit and an openness to Your Holy Spirit. Help me be humble enough to trust Your Word and Your mind more than my own, and to have the patience and grace to wait for Your voice.
