The King Who Leads with Love

The King Who Leads with Love

December 24, 2025

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35 NIV

How many leaders do you know who are characterized by their love for the people they lead? Not nearly enough. Lord Acton, a British historian and politician in the 1800s, is commonly quoted: “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Unfortunately, while most of us know a leader characterized by love for the people they see themselves as here to serve, we have all experienced the other side of the coin as well.

Jesus walked onto the scene when leadership was powerful and corrupt, both politically and religiously. But He calmly and peacefully entered into the situation. He was defined by love and called all who would follow Him as King to live and lead with exactly the same full measure of love and truth.

Jesus is recognized, talked and sung about as “the King of Love.” Why?

Sacrificial Love: He laid down His life for others, the ultimate act of selfless love. He demonstrated through His own willing death that His Kingdom isn't about force but about giving and serving. Servant Leadership: This concept became popular in business and corporate leadership in the 1980s, and Jesus was the supreme example. He taught and lived service, washing His disciples' feet and associating with the marginalized, showing His reign and rule always through humility, not domination. Unconditional, Pursuing, and Persistent Love: Jesus’ love isn't based on merit but extends to all people, from the greatest to the lowest. He invites and urges, calling everyone to a personal relationship with Him, even those who reject Him. Conquest by Grace: He conquers enemies and frees people from sin, not by force but by seeking them, offering redemption, rightness with God, and freedom through His sacrifice and forgiveness. An Internal Kingdom: Jesus repeatedly confirmed that His Kingdom is not of this world. His Kingship builds an inner kingdom of holiness, peace, and truth. Faithful and Good Shepherding: He protects, guides, and lays down His life for His sheep/people, intimately caring for them and calling them to follow. Transformation: His loving leadership doesn’t leave us as we are. It produces changed lives and transformed relationships, helping us lead others to live lives of love and service to others. Oh, what a King!

  • The King of Love’s throne is the cross, once a symbol of scorn and suffering, not earthly power. He transformed it into a symbol of mercy and forgiveness. His rule is defined by giving all for His people, conquering by selfless devotion, and inviting everyone into His Kingdom. King Jesus – forever King of Love!
