All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity – all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47 NLT

The New Testament clearly shows the growth of the early church was linked to their radical love. Jesus commended that our one identity and command as His followers was this sacrificial, outgoing love like His (John 13:34-35). The Book of Acts, the story of the early church, could be titled “Love in Action Grows the Church.” Luke, the author of Acts, describes the early Christian community's lifestyle and how their actions were a powerful witness that led to the Lord adding to their number daily.

They were identified by community and sharing. The believers shared everything they had and knew their areas of influence well enough to realize take care of their needs. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had a need. This practical love was a powerful visible testimony to the surrounding society. Fellowship and devotion also characterized them. This included meeting together regularly at the temple (church) and in homes for fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. This deep communal bond was a stark contrast to the isolation prevalent in their society.

The lifestyle of the members of the early church was a direct fulfillment of Jesus’ command, causing outsiders to be attracted by their genuine and selfless care for one another and welcome to others. Jesus’ followers wrote letters that demonstrate the character and emphasis of the leadership of the church. They consistently speak to the importance of love in action, strengthening the church The collective message of the New Testament is that this radical, counter-cultural, self-sacrificial, outgoing love was a key factor in the organic and powerful growth of the early church. They did it! They passed on the message so effectively that we are here today in amazing numbers.

We can do it too. The future of the church of Jesus Christ and the future of the people around us are in our hands.

  • Jesus, I will follow You and build Your Kingdom. I will go against in the grain in love.
