The Purpose of Gifts

March 4, 2026

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV

Sometimes I read something in God’s Word that seems challenging to understand. Then there are other places that are so clear they are impossible to misunderstand. 1 Corinthians 12:7 is one of those. No matter how you read it, the fact is that our spiritual gifts are not given to us for ourselves alone. They are given “for the common good,” for the benefit of everyone. We have our spiritual gifts so we can help each other. We are not saved just to attend church and eventually go to heaven. We are empowered to serve significantly.

How do we do that? Well, of course, our different gifts will be applied in a variety of ways, but they all achieve the same multi-faceted purpose: to benefit the body and mutually glorify God.

When we use our gifts, we build up the church. Spiritual gifts are the tools the Holy Spirit uses to equip, encourage, and strengthen the community of believers. Every time you serve, God is using you in these powerful ways to build His Kingdom.

When we use our gifts, we serve others. We are created to serve, and when we use our spiritual gifts, our serving is most fulfilling to us personally and helpful to others. Isn’t it wonderful when the person who is very gifted with hospitality but has no musical gifts is satisfied with their gifts and helps provide a warm welcome for others instead of insisting on serving on the worship team? And thank God the worship team isn’t in charge of the kitchen.😊 Celebrating and using our unique gifts are the best ways to serve others in love.

When we use our gifts, we bring praise and glory to God. People are attracted and

their needs are met as we use our gifts. We pass the praise on to Him as the Source of our power and grace.

When we use our gifts, we bring unity to the body. Because gifts are diverse and we recognize that no one person can do everything, we highlight the love and need we have for each other. Our dependence on each other enables us to be a true family.

When we use our gifts, we are able to carry out effective ministry. We have the ability to fulfill the specific tasks and mission God has prepared for the body of believers in their community. Together we accomplish what no one can ever do alone.

  • Father, help me willingly and joyfully allow others to depend on me and allow myself to depend on others in the body of Christ. Together we have Your great mission to accomplish.
