Serving Reveals Maturity

Serving Reveals Maturity

Today’s Scripture: Philippians 2:3-5

Spiritual maturity is often misunderstood.

Many people assume maturity is measured by knowledge, years of church attendance, or familiarity with Scripture. While those things are valuable, Paul points to another indicator of growth.

Mature believers learn to put others before themselves.

In Philippians 2, Paul instructs Christians to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Instead, they are to value others above themselves and look not only to their own interests but also to the interests of others.

This kind of thinking does not come naturally. Our default tendency is often self-focus. We think about our schedules, our needs, our preferences, and our comfort. As we grow in Christ, however, our perspective begins to change.

We become more aware of others. We become more compassionate. We become more willing to serve.

Serving reveals spiritual maturity because it demonstrates that God’s priorities are becoming our priorities. The more we resemble Jesus, the less our lives revolve around ourselves. This does not mean neglecting healthy boundaries or ignoring legitimate needs. It means developing a heart that consistently asks, “How can I help?” “How can I encourage?” “How can I serve?”

Maturity is not measured by how much we know. It is measured by how much we become like Jesus.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Pay attention to the needs of others today. Look for one opportunity to place someone else’s needs ahead of your own.

PRAYER

Father, grow me into the kind of maturity that puts others first. My natural tendency is to focus on my own schedule, needs, and comfort. Reshape my heart to value others above myself and to look to their interests, not only my own. As I become more like Jesus, let my life revolve less around me and more around serving those You place before me.
