Obedience Before Understanding

Obedience Before Understanding

October 29, 2026

Today’s Scripture: Luke 5:5

Peter’s response to Jesus is one of the clearest pictures of faith in all of Scripture.

“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Peter’s experience told him this was a bad idea. He was a professional fisherman. He knew the lake. He knew the conditions. He knew they had already tried. Everything logical pointed toward failure.

Yet Peter obeyed. This is often how faith works.

We would prefer understanding before obedience. We want all the details before taking the first step. We want certainty before commitment. But God frequently works in the opposite order.

Obedience often comes before understanding.

Abraham left before he knew where he was going. Joshua marched before the walls fell. Noah built before the rain came. Peter lowered the nets before the miracle appeared.

Faith is not pretending to understand everything. Faith is trusting God’s wisdom more than our own. Sometimes God’s instructions will challenge our logic, stretch our comfort zones, and require us to step into uncertainty.

The question is not whether His instructions make sense to us.

The question is whether we trust the One giving them.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Is there an area where God is asking you to obey before you fully understand? Write it down and commit to taking one step forward.

PRAYER

Jesus, like Peter, I often want to understand before I obey. My experience and logic say to wait, but You are calling me to trust. Help me say, “Because you say so,” and step forward even when Your instructions stretch my comfort and challenge my reasoning. Teach me to trust Your wisdom more than my own.
